Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden administration committed the United States to a second pledge to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which was created to support developing countries in meeting their ambitious climate goals. This pledge builds on a $3 billion pledge made in 2014 under President Barack Obama. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
President Joe Biden’s pledge to the Green Climate Fund reaffirms America’s commitment to working collectively to combat the climate crisis. As the largest historical emitter of carbon dioxide, the United States must show leadership in helping developing nations prepare for the impacts of climate change and building the global clean energy economy. Announcing this pledge today shows that the United States takes this responsibility seriously.
It is now up to Congress to follow through on this promise by appropriating international climate financing. As we near the end of what’s expected to be the hottest year on record, it’s clear that urgent action is required to slow the disastrous impacts of climate change. Mobilizing resources quickly and efficiently is essential to meeting this moment.
