Washington, D.C. — Today, House Democrats introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act, a landmark reform measure that will prevent presidential abuses of power that have become all too common in the current administration. These reforms will also help restore accountability and transparency in government, restore checks and balances, and protect our elections from foreign interference. In response, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Not since the dark days of Watergate have we seen a president so shamelessly abuse his power and put personal gain over the national interest. With trust in government near an all-time low, Americans want solutions that will end the culture of corruption and provide accountability. The landmark legislation introduced today will help strengthen our democratic institutions so they cannot be so willfully exploited by future administrations.
These reforms will ensure that no president can abuse the pardon power or enrich himself at the expense of the American people. They will strengthen Congress’ powers of investigation and ensure the president can be held accountable for criminal conduct. And they will help protect us from foreign interference in our elections. The past four years have seen great damage to our democratic institutions. These reforms are crucial to protect our democracy and the rule of law.
