Washington, D.C. — Today, congressional Democrats reintroduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act, landmark legislation that would prevent the rampant abuse of presidential power seen during the Trump administration. In response, Ben Olinsky, senior vice president of Structural Reform and Governance at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The brazen culture of corruption and dishonesty during the Trump administration showed the need to make our system of government more responsive and accountable to all Americans. The Protecting Our Democracy Act would prevent the corrupt use of presidential power that undermines democratic norms and threatens the rule of law. It would restore the checks and balances between the executive and legislative branches, prevent the abuse of the pardon power, provide for real enforcement of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, protect whistleblowers, and offer other key protections for U.S. democracy. Above all, it would help ensure that no president is above the law.
