Washington, D.C. — Ben Olinsky , vice president for policy and strategy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today after a Texas federal judge struck down an Obama administration rule that would have expanded overtime protections for millions of American workers:
Today’s ruling by Judge Amos Mazzant is a huge loss for the 4.2 million Americans and their families who would have benefited from the Obama administration’s update of federal overtime pay protections. The Obama administration Department of Labor acted well within its authority under the Fair Labor Standards Act to ensure that working people receive extra pay when they put in extra hours. As Labor Day approaches, Secretary Alexander Acosta and President Donald Trump should stand up for workers by appealing this ruling immediately.
