STATEMENT: The ACA and the Resistance Are Working, Says CAP’s Neera Tanden

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement after President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) cancelled twice in 24 hours a vote in the House of Representatives to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or ACA:

The American people have roundly rejected Trumpcare, and today, their voices dealt a deafening blow to President Trump’s dangerous agenda that would rip care from 24 million Americans. Over the past month, President Trump and Speaker Ryan have put on full display their disregard for the health and economic security of working Americans. Trump and Ryan’s callousness translated into a failure to force through a deeply unpopular piece of legislation that would leave millions of Americans worse off.  This bill would slash care for low-income Americans, women, older Americans, working families, and those living in rural areas—all to give a giant tax cut to the wealthy.

Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price will try to undermine the ACA at every turn. We must not be complacent, we must be vigilant, we must bring pressure to bear whenever they try to undo insurance protections that are guaranteed under law. This is not the end of the fight. Despite what President Trump says, the Affordable Care Act is working. But most importantly, the resistance is working.
