Washington D.C. — In a wide ranging interview with Thinking CAP—a podcast from the Center for American Progress—Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calls for more transparency and accountability from Facebook after Russian operatives used ads on the social media platform to influence the 2016 presidential campaign. Clinton said:
We need even more disclosure and all the platforms that can be, and now we know were, used to influence voters, need to have some requirement of disclosure. Now, what happened with Facebook and Twitter, in particular, is that it appears as those these proxies for the Russians were spending money to buy these ads in our election. That already is illegal. You know, foreign entities cannot support candidates for American elective office. So we’ve got to get to the bottom of that.
Clinton also talks candidly about why she lost the white women’s vote while earning overwhelming support from black women voters.
When Comey came out on October 28th and dropped that letter on me, I think a lot of women, white women, were concerned. […] I just think that other women, who’ve seen more and experienced more and understand that you’ve got to take everything with not just a grain but maybe a pound or two of salt, were not that affected.
When asked by Igor Volsky if congressional Republicans and the National Rifle Association (NRA) are complicit in the epidemic of gun violence in this country, Clinton replied, “Of course they are.” She further expressed her frustration at the inability of elected leaders to pass sensible gun reform.
One of the first things that Trump did when he became president was to undo the regulation from the Obama era so, you know, mental health records no longer prevent you from buying a gun. In fact, being blind does not any longer prevent you from buying a gun. I mean, this is beyond absurd; this is evil. This is nothing but pure, unadulterated greed motivated by people who want to sell as many guns as they can. To engage in a falsity of fear and rhetoric about why everybody has to have guns and, you know, the evidence is just so clear that more guns do not keep you safer and more guns in the wrong hands lead to terrible incidents. But, you know, we’ve had 200 and, what, 73 events in this past year of mass shootings, which means four or more killed. So, yes, we see the horrors of Las Vegas; it happens every day. It’s part of the 91 people who get killed every single day by guns.
