RELEASE: The One Big ‘Beautiful’ Bill’s SNAP Cuts Would Strain Food Banks Amid Rising Food Insecurity

Washington, D.C. — The Senate has released its version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which would enact the largest cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the program’s history. A new column from the Center for American Progress examines how the proposed historic cuts to SNAP would further strain food banks, highlighting the warnings food banks have given regarding the unprecedented level of need this would create as food insecurity continues to rise across all 50 states.

Food banks have made it clear: They are not equipped to handle the hunger crisis that would result from the proposed cuts to SNAP. Food banks have already been squeezed for resources after the Trump administration froze or cut nearly $1 billion in federal funding earlier this year that food banks rely on to serve their communities. Any cuts to SNAP would further stretch food banks’ resources and limit their ability to adequately support those in need.

This new CAP column examines the nationwide rise in food insecurity, why food banks cannot replace SNAP benefits or keep up with the demand, and how overburdening food banks would put disaster relief at risk for communities recovering from disasters beyond their control. The column also features direct quotes from food banks across the country about their current resource levels and their inability to fulfill increased demand if the SNAP program is cut.

“Food banks across the country have made it clear: They would not be able to adequately support a hunger crisis triggered by the proposed cuts to SNAP in the Senate’s version of the One Big Beautiful Bill,” said Kyle Ross, policy analyst for Inclusive Economy at CAP and author of the column. “Enacting the largest-ever cut to SNAP during a period of rising food insecurity on top of cuts to federal food bank funding would cause hunger to spike to levels that simply could not be met by charitable giving.”
