Washington, D.C. — Today, the Supreme Court agreed to decide whether the Trump administration can add a question about citizenship to the 2020 census. In response, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The Supreme Court must stop the Trump administration from rigging the census to prevent a fair and accurate count. As the lower court found, the citizenship question was added without legal justification and contrary to advice from government experts. It would only discourage millions of Americans from taking part in the census, undermine representation for disenfranchised communities, and jeopardize federal funding for critical programs.
