RELEASE: Sacramento Mayor Warns, ‘We Will Not Retreat, We Will Not Cower’ in the Face of Legal Challenges to California’s Immigration Laws

Washington, D.C. — In response to the Trump administration’s lawsuit, filed late Tuesday night, against his state’s immigration policies, Sacramento, California, Mayor Darrell Steinberg, called President Donald Trump a “bully” and says his state is not backing down in the face of legal threats to California’s values. “We will not retreat, we will not cower, we will stand for the best of American values. We will work to protect hardworking families, Dreamers, and others who are just trying to make their way.”

In an interview with Thinking CAP, a podcast from the Center for American Progress, Mayor Steinberg dismissed the administration’s notion that so-called sanctuary jurisdictions harbor criminals. “This has never been about, and isn’t about, protecting people who have been accused of, or have committed, serious crimes. But that is not what the Trump agenda is about. There is only one way to deal with a bully, and that is to stand strong.” He added, “What the administration is engaging in is an intentional, repeated strategy to intimidate, to divide people, and to create fear among the immigrant communities in California and throughout the country.”
