Washington, D.C. — Oceans should play a bigger role in the global effort to address climate change and meet commitments put in place by the Paris Agreement, according to a new issue brief from the Center for American Progress.
The analysis comes after last week’s agreement by nearly 200 nations at the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) climate talks to follow a set of rules that will guide efforts to cut carbon emissions and curb global warming. The brief details the growing movement to integrate ocean issues into the international climate conversation and shows how countries and states can advance ocean-based solutions in their own climate plans and multilateral climate efforts.
National governments, for example, can strengthen their climate goals by focusing on ocean action, while state and local governments can create ocean-climate contributions that support the Paris Agreement.
