Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress has released a new column analyzing two new budget resolutions proposed by Republican leaders on the House and Senate budget committees. The Senate version was marked up in committee yesterday, and the House version is set to be marked up tomorrow. While the resolutions vary in scope, both would unlock reconciliation powers to allow the Senate to pass tax and spending legislation with a simple majority vote. Further, as the analysis details, both resolutions would instruct relevant congressional committees to make significant, devastating, and unpopular cuts to health care and nutrition programs, among others.
“Americans already feel squeezed, which is why Congress must reject any effort that would take away health care and food in order to pay for massive tax giveaways to billionaire political donors like Elon Musk,” said Bobby Kogan, senior director of federal budget policy at CAP and co-author of the column. “This is nothing more than a partisan scheme by Budget Committee Republicans to pull the rug out from under the most vulnerable.”
