Washington, D.C. — Today, a coalition of 140 national, state, and local organizations sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) pleading with them to bring a resolution to censure Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to the House floor before the end of the 115th Congress. This letter was sent following the congressman’s recent comments referring to Mexican immigrants as “dirt” in a conversation with supporters earlier this month. These remarks are not in any way the first use of dehumanizing, racist language by Rep. King.
Upon passage of the resolution, the letter recommends House leaders strip Rep. King of committee and subcommittee leadership posts in the next Congress and require him to stand in the well of the chamber to receive the official condemnation of the body.
The remaining days of this congressional session represent the final opportunity for House Republicans to act decisively and make it clear that Rep. King does not speak for them, and that his racist remarks have no place in the people’s House.
