AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT: Lawrence Korb on Secretary Gates’s Proposed Defense Budget Cuts

Lawrence Korb, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, is available to comment on the cuts to the defense budget that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has recently committed to making without compromising U.S. national security. In a report entitled, “Strong and Sustainable: How to Reduce Military Spending While Keeping Our Nation Safe,” Lawrence Korb and Laura Conley identify $109 billion that could be saved in the FY 2015 budget, which could possibly even help achieve a balanced budget.

Korb’s report suggests potential savings in the following areas:

  • Redirecting savings from Secretary Gates’s efficiency initiative to reduce the overall federal budget
  • Gradually rolling back the growth in the ground forces since September 11, 2001
  • Canceling or scaling back a number of defense-acquisition programs

The Center for American Progress also released a report entitled, “A Thousand Cuts,” which complements Korb’s report by providing defense spending reductions to help meet spending-cut goals.
