Washington, D.C. — Millions of Americans are disconnected from the financial system. Some do not have bank accounts at all, while others with accounts also rely on products outside the mainstream banking system, such as check cashers and pawn shops. On Thursday, October 30, the Center for American Progress will host an event to discuss new findings from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, on the number of Americans without bank accounts, what being left behind means for families and communities, and what policymakers and financial institutions are doing to bridge this gap.
