Washington, D.C. — As Congress continues to debate the national budget, funding for important programs that promote national service are at risk. On September 16 at 11:00 a.m. ET, the Center for American Progress will host an event featuring a keynote address from U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and including an important discussion between White House Director of the Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Muñoz, City Year’s national board of trustees Chair Jonathan Lavine, and America’s Promise Alliance President and CEO John Gomperts on improving the growth of national service programs and the business and economic cases for making national service a priority.
The Center for American Progress seeks to engage with policymakers; the education, nonprofit, and business communities; and national service program leaders to find ways to strengthen and expand national service. These programs are an integral part of developing human capital, encouraging economic growth, and reducing inequality. They create opportunities for people to overcome challenges and disadvantages through the acquisition of critical workforce skills and experience. Yet, rather than making necessary new investments in national service as part of a smart workforce development and economic growth strategy, Congress is seeking dramatic cuts in this area.
