Summary

American Progress is seeking a Policy Analyst to join the Democracy team, part of the Structural Reform and Governance department. The Democracy team is dedicated to taking swift action to strengthen the guardrails of democracy in a way that equips it to serve as a force for good. This position will conduct research and support projects by senior staff on issues such as advancing voting rights, improving election administration, combating corruption and reforming our political system, and recommending reforms to institutions of government to ensure they deliver for Americans.

The work will be driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as by strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.

Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead policy and research projects at the direction of the head of the Democracy team, its senior staff, and the Senior Vice President, Structural Reform and Governance.
  • Design and conduct research and analysis in support of Democracy team priorities; draft reports, rapid response products, literature reviews, memos, talking points, and advocacy materials.
  • Draft public comment letters in response to official requests for information, proposed rulemakings, and related tasks as needed by the team.
  • Work with the Director of Elections to identify and seize upon opportunities to safeguard elections and advance electoral systems.
  • Work with senior staff on anti-corruption and political reform proposals and reports highlighting the need for these reforms.
  • Lead matters related to faith and government censorship while helping shape the public narrative through products and messaging, interfacing with censorship/free-speech and faith coalitions and organizations.
  • Represent the team at a range of external coalition meetings and provide support for public events and conferences as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least four years of relevant professional experience.
  • Exceptional research and writing ability.
  • Working knowledge of core democracy policy issues.
  • Experience conducting original research and successfully engaging in advocacy activities.
  • Experience with grassroots and nonprofit organizations and coalition work.
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • Comfort working under pressure or tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a team.
  • Self-starter who seeks direction as needed.
  • Ability to initiate projects and balance multiple projects at once.
