Director/Senior Director of Campaigns

The Director/Senior Director of Campaigns will work closely with the Vice President for Campaigns and Outreach to help shape and execute multifaceted campaign plans that leverage the organization’s unique assets through its storytelling, research, communications, and digital content production and distribution capacities. This individual will help design tactics, seize opportunities to implement established strategies, and work across teams within American Progress to successfully execute priority campaigns, including state-based campaigns. The Director or Senior Director will also help ensure American Progress is partnering closely with a range of progressive groups to guarantee that the organization’s advocacy efforts are aligned and well-integrated with those of its allies.

Over the next year and a half, the Director/Senior Director of Campaigns will primarily focus on implementing an economic narrative strategy that centers workers and communities in key states to show how progressive policies are growing the economy by growing the middle class.

This campaign will develop key examples, identify clear contrasts, and show how more Americans of all backgrounds have the stability and security of a middle-class life thanks to economic policies enacted by the Biden administration. Over the course of the campaign, American Progress will show progressive allies and stakeholders the long-term importance of centering policies around an economic story where all Americans benefit from a growing economy.

Strong candidates for this role will have a keen desire to try new approaches and learn, a sharp understanding of the connection between research and communications, the ability to write quickly, and experience working with Americans from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

This individual will be driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country. The Director/Senior Director will be part of a dynamic department that supports work across American Progress’ five crosscutting priorities:

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate closely with the Vice President for Campaigns and Outreach to execute a long-term, multifaceted campaign focused on building an economy for all and growing the middle class in America.
• Identify rapid-response opportunities to advance campaign strategies, and help execute these opportunities effectively.
• Monitor progress toward key goals across all active American Progress campaigns and be informed and prepared to take initiative in order to intervene and keep programs on track daily.
• Provide day-to-day management of specific assigned campaigns.
• Work with teams in the Advocacy and Outreach department as well as with assigned policy teams and outside contractors to develop effective tactics for campaigns.
• Support the execution of all advocacy campaigns as assigned.
• Engage elected officials and other stakeholders in CAP Action’s strategic messaging and advocacy activities as directed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
• At least seven years of work experience on campaigns, with a strong preference for some issue-focused campaign experience.
• Experience working with electoral or independent expenditure campaigns is beneficial.
• Strong desire to develop personal management skills, including managing processes, external vendors, and across teams with different disciplines and levels of experience—for example, research, policy, and communications.
• Fast writer accustomed to drafting materials for editing and interested in learning from feedback.
• Detail oriented, with strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to track deadlines.
• Personal commitment to progressive values and policies, as well as an openness to being challenged and learning from those with different perspectives.
• Team player with an ability to do what is needed to achieve organization and team goals.

The minimum salary for the Director position is $92,000, and the minimum salary for the Senior Director position is $112,000.
