With possible reports of community spread in California and Washington state, the country may now be in the midst of a coronavirus outbreak. We need to adopt the physician’s mind-set: hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Coronavirus presents a novel test for our government — swift and decisive action now will set us up for more security in an increasingly vulnerable world. From a physician’s point of view, here are 10 steps the government could take to maximize the effectiveness of the U.S. response to a pandemic, while also reassuring the public that the government is competent to address the threat.
