Marriage Equality Isn’t Enough

The progressive movement has always stood for the basic principle that we have a shared responsibility to leave to the next generation a country that is more equal and more fair. Throughout the last century, efforts to expand circles of opportunity for women, people of color and LGBT Americans have found a welcome home in that movement. With the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of nationwide marriage equality earlier this summer, both progressives and LGBT Americans can celebrate the historic change we have pushed forward together.

But despite the steps our country has taken advancing equality for all, we can never mistake our progress for victory. There is more work to be done to ensure the dignity of LGBT citizens is fully respected, and America is ready to take more steps forward.
