Defeating ISIS

Building a Framework to Support a Reliable and Effective Opposition to Assad and ISIS

Please join the Center for American Progress for an event on the fight to degrade and defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, and the effort to develop a capable and reliable partner in Syria to fight both ISIS and the Assad regime.

President Barack Obama’s announcement of a new U.S. strategy to combat ISIS in both Iraq and Syria will require a concerted effort to build a committed coalition of partners both regionally and locally to effectively defeat the extremist group. A critical challenge will be building an effective and reliable partner within the Syrian opposition who will be capable of combating both ISIS and the Assad regime.
