Climate change is no longer a far-off threat—its impacts are jeopardizing the health and safety of communities today. Increasing resilience to the effects of climate change, such as extreme heat, severe weather, sea-level rise, and wildfires, saves lives and increases security. Yet advancing adaptation plans and projects is challenging for many reasons, ranging from an overall lack of funding to difficulty measuring adaptation success. Even with these challenges, leaders around the world are trailblazing resilience strategies in their communities.
The Center for American Progress, in partnership with the Columbia Climate School of Columbia University, is hosting a panel discussion focused on successful adaptation and resilience practices through empowering local communities and thinking innovatively, as well as lessons for replicating success elsewhere. We will hear from adaptation experts from coastal communities in Bangladesh, the Netherlands, New York, and the Bay Area that face similar threats but have taken unique approaches to protecting their communities from climate impacts. In the midst of devastating fires, floods, and storms during a year that is on track to be the hottest ever recorded, join us for this important conversation.
