Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to affect almost every facet of the U.S. economy and people’s lives, promising huge benefits but also posing important novel and existing threats to workers, civil rights, and democracy. Society can’t wait long to decide how best to regulate AI, along with other online services and technologies that have been left to operate without sufficient safeguards. Congress has convened Senate and House AI task forces and committees that are hard at work on potential AI legislation. While there are many other critical AI issues, four issues that Congress must address in its work include:
- Guardrails for ethical AI development and deployment.
- Protections for workers and measures to ensure that AI broadly benefits society.
- Civil rights protections to combat discrimination and bias in automated systems.
- Election integrity and how best to mitigate misinformation and disinformation and deepfakes.
