Although the United States recognizes persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity as grounds for asylum, it does not collect any sexual orientation or gender identity data. Immigration Equality provided the Center for American Progress with its data on completed asylum cases from 2010 to 2014 to provide insight into where lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, people seek protection from, their experiences in the asylum process, and how certain factors affect case outcomes.
