A growing number of members of Congress in both parties believes that, between the poles of the stay-the-course surge and the growing pro-withdrawal chorus, there is an opening for a “third way”: Compel President Bush to implement the recommendations that the Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group made in November.
That would be a huge mistake. However credible the report may have been upon its release, its recommendations are now far too weak a prescription for the dire situation that faces us on the ground in Iraq. Before going any further, Congress should reject the seductive promise of the report.
