CAP Authors Letter to Meta Addressing CrowdTangle Shutdown Concerns

The Center for American Progress and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue co-authored a sign-on letter to Meta executives urging them to delay the closure of CrowdTangle amid the U.S. election cycle and given a lack of features in the tool’s replacement.

On May 7, 2024, the Center for American Progress and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue sent Meta executives a letter on behalf of 51 organizations and researchers about the upcoming CrowdTangle shutdown and Meta Content Library replacement. CrowdTangle—set to be discontinued on August 14, 2024—is a critical tool employed by a vast network of journalists, researchers, and election observers to scrutinize the flow of information during election cycles in the United States and globally. The letter outlines numerous concerns and makes two requests of Meta, including that CrowdTangle remain operational and available through at least January 31, 2025, and that organizations currently using CrowdTangle have access to the Meta Content Library moving forward.
