STATEMENT: CAP’s Topher Spiro on the Passage of Resolution Allowing ACA Repeal to Move Forward

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Vice President for Health Policy Topher Spiro issued the following statement after the Senate voted in the middle of the night to pass a budget resolution allowing the process of repealing the Affordable Care Act to begin.

Despite last night’s procedural vote, it has become clear that Republicans in the Senate are in total disarray. The American people overwhelmingly understand that you don’t jump off a cliff without knowing how you’re going to land safely, and many members of the Senate majority are beginning to see how dangerous that prospect would be.

Contrary to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s claims, the Affordable Care Act is stable and working. Independent analysts have concluded that premium increases were a “one-time correction” and that insurer financial performance is stable and improving. It is time for Senate Republicans to work responsibly with Senate Democrats to improve the law, rather than holding the health and financial security of millions of Americans hostage. If the Senate Majority proceeds down this reckless path, they will own each and every negative outcome that follows.
