STATEMENT: Trump’s Plan to Weaken Clean Car Standards is an Attack on Consumers and Climate, CAP’s Neera Tanden Says

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Trump administration announced a plan to dramatically weaken clean car standards. These standards have spurred car companies to develop cleaner and more efficient vehicles, saving consumers money on gas while reducing the harmful pollution from cars and trucks that causes climate change. In response, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This reckless plan to gut clean car standards is nothing more than a massive gift to the oil industry, and it forces American families to spend billions more at the pump. It’s the Trump administration’s worst attack to date on efforts to fight climate change. The transportation sector is now the country’s largest source of the carbon pollution that causes climate change, and this push for dirtier, less efficient vehicles will lead to more intense and destructive extreme weather events like hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Trump and his cronies have shown time and time again that they are not working for the American public, but instead supporting a culture of corruption that benefits the wealthy and themselves. Far from working to restore trust in the EPA, the agency’s new acting administrator is proving to be nothing more than a clone of the disgraced Scott Pruitt.
