STATEMENT: Trump Must Be Held Accountable for Plot To Overturn 2020 Election, CAP’s Patrick Gaspard Says

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a four-count criminal indictment against former President Donald Trump alleging that he masterminded a plot to illegally overturn the valid results of the 2020 presidential election. The charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The justice system is now staring Donald Trump directly in the eye. He must be held accountable for one of the darkest chapters in American history: trying to subvert the 2020 presidential election and inciting the January 6 insurrection. Prosecutors must now move swiftly toward a fair trial without political interference or distractions. This is the third criminal indictment against Trump. These prosecutions strengthen the foundational principle that no American is above the law, not even a former president. Without full accountability, we risk the further erosion of American institutions and our rule of law.
