STATEMENT: Trump Must Be Held Accountable for Insurrection, CAP’s Patrick Gaspard Says

Washington, D.C. — After the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol presented its key conclusions and voted to refer four criminal charges against Donald Trump to the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as House Ethics Committee referrals for House members, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

It’s time for Donald Trump to face the music. That’s the clear message from the bipartisan January 6 committee to the Department of Justice. Now, prosecutors must move swiftly to bring criminal charges against Trump and his allies for inciting a treasonous insurrection and trying to subvert the valid 2020 election.

And just as shameful and terrifying, two of the men who want to lead the next House—Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH)—were among those referred to the Ethics Committee for failing to comply with lawful subpoenas. They should be disqualified from holding leadership roles in the House.

Now it’s time for the Justice Department, the House Ethics Committee, state and local prosecutors, and bar associations to take the baton and quickly bring the much-needed accountability that Americans are demanding. We must protect our democracy and assure the American people that no one is above the rule of law.
