STATEMENT: Trump Must Abide by Legal Process, CAP’s Patrick Gaspard Says

Washington, D.C. — According to press reports, the U.S. Department of Justice has issued a criminal indictment against former President Donald Trump alleging that he mishandled classified documents and obstructed justice to prevent federal authorities from finding them, among other charges. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

No one is above the law—not even a former president. Donald Trump must now abide by the legal process and be tried just like any other criminal defendant, without political interference or distractions. Allegations that President Trump tried to obstruct this investigation into the handling of documents that could implicate national security are especially disturbing. These charges only add to Trump’s legacy of eroding American institutions.
