STATEMENT: The Proposal To Expand the Child Tax Credit Would Help Millions of Children in Poverty, Says CAP’s Patrick Gaspard

Washington, D.C. — As reported in the press, a new bipartisan deal to expand the child tax credit (CTC) would provide crucial support for America’s families. In response to this legislative proposal, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This is an unmissable opportunity to reduce poverty among low-income children and families. It would lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty immediately, reduce the depth of poverty for another 3 million children, and raise even more children out of poverty when it takes full effect in 2025. While there’s still more to do, this long-overdue support would put cash in parents’ pockets to help make ends meet.

Congress should pass this enhancement to the CTC for low-income children across the country. We must keep fighting for families to ensure they have the support and resources they need to help children thrive.
