Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution that will keep the government funded through March 1 and at least partially running through March 8. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This must be the last continuing resolution. The MAGA caucus yet again has proven that it is unable to fulfill the most basic responsibilities of the job. Kicking the can down the road on funding our government for a third time has created unnecessary uncertainty and chaos for federal workers, service members, and the American public. The American people deserve better than these temporary funding measures.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) needs to step up and do his job by passing full-year spending bills that honor the bipartisan budget deal. Government is supposed to work for people, not cater to the demands of extremists. Congress should be working to lower the cost of living and meeting our domestic and national security obligations. But the MAGA caucus’s ongoing shutdown threats are delaying this critical work.
