Washington, D.C. — Today, congressional leaders announced that they reached a deal to prevent a partial government shutdown. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
For five months now, the MAGA caucus has caused chaos and uncertainty by nearly forcing government shutdowns four times. Careening from near shutdown to near shutdown is no way to run a country. Coming within days of a shutdown undermines our government agencies’ ability to serve the American people, diminishes trust in government, weakens our reputation with other countries around the world, and wastes taxpayer dollars by leading to inefficiency.
I am relieved that an agreement has been reached to fund the government. Enormous credit goes to President Joe Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and to the appropriations committees, for keeping the government open for the American people, even in the wake of extreme demands. But the American people deserve better than the MAGA caucus shutdown chaos of the past few months.
