Washington D.C. — Today, the American Dream and Promise Act was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. In response, Debu Gandhi, senior director of Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress issued the following statement:
For decades now, Congress has failed to create a workable immigration system. Life in the shadows holds back longtime immigrant community members from contributing more fully to the country they call home. Much better than a cruel and destructive indiscriminate mass deportation policy is meaningful legislation such as the American Dream and Promise Act, which provides immigrants with an opportunity to earn a more durable status.
Strong border security, new legal immigration pathways, and an earned path for immigrants who have long called this country home are all essential to fix our broken immigration system and strengthen our economy. Over many years of surveying the public, polling shows that a majority of Americans support a path to citizenship for Dreamers. Enacting the American Dream and Promise Act would increase U.S. gross domestic product by a cumulative total of $799 billion over 10 years and create 285,400 new jobs. We urge lawmakers to listen to the American people and pass the American Dream and Promise Act this Congress.
