STATEMENT: Swire on Franken’s ‘Location Privacy Protection Act of 2011’: Americans Should Have Privacy Surrounding Their Daily Movements

Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress’s Senior Fellow Peter Swire offered the following comment on the location privacy bill, introduced by Senator Al Franken (D-MN) today, which would protect Americans from corporation misuse of data collected from an individual’s mobile device:

"For the first time in history, many Americans are carrying tracking devices with them on a daily basis—their cell phones. Until now, there have been no laws limiting how most companies can use, or misuse, this information about your moment-by-moment location. Sen. Franken’s bill is an excellent start for the debate about what rights Americans should have to protect the privacy of our daily movements."
