Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) conceded to a host of MAGA extremists’ demands in exchange for their support for his bid for speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
This past week, Americans have watched MAGA extremists hold Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s ambition hostage. To free himself, McCarthy has shown a willingness to sacrifice every American’s economic freedom—agreeing to either default on our debt or push major cuts in hardworking Americans’ retirement security and health care. Anyone who votes for McCarthy and the deal that will put him in power is complicit in the economic devastation that this deal would inflict on Americans.
