STATEMENT: MLK Jr. Day Is a Reminder That ‘Progress Is Neither Automatic Nor Inevitable,’ Says CAP’s Patrick Gaspard

Washington, D.C. — Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

On this King Day, we look to the past in order to secure a just future for all, as we are reminded by Dr. King that our “progress is neither automatic nor inevitable.” We arrive at this holiday celebrating major investments in infrastructure, health care, and environmental remediation in President Joe Biden’s agenda, that all center accountability on justice and inclusive opportunity in their outcomes. This progress has been possible because of the persistence of African American activists who have stayed true to Dr. King’s purpose and sacrifice to build a fair society for all Americans. Now we will implement these policies guided by urgency and by love.
