Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will review Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) potentially as early as spring 2024. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This case has nothing to do with patient safety and everything to do with extremists taking aim at controlling women and eroding freedom by further ending abortion in America. While it is a relief that access to mifepristone remains unchanged as the Supreme Court moves forward with this case, the court has already created a dangerous precedent for extremists to further meddle in medicine, risking the health and safety of every American. Medical experts should be the ones determining drug safety decision, not judges fueled by their own personal ideologies who have thrown established legal norms and precedent to the wayside.
