Washington, D.C. — Today, 14 children and one teacher were killed by a gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Children are prayers who walk among us. Don’t lift up thoughts and prayers for them now that they are beyond our failings. Honor their sacredness in the here and now by taking every measure to shield them from harm. It is both unbelievable and devastatingly predictable that we are grieving another school shooting caused by easy access to guns that overwhelm law enforcement in every part of our nation—urban and rural, red and blue. This is a uniquely American failing that we have every power to prevent but no moral spine to confront.
These children were absolutely defenseless and our society lacks any protection while we endure the platitudes of the powerful.
