STATEMENT: Georgia Indictment Another Step Toward Holding Trump Accountable, CAP’s Patrick Gaspard Says

Washington, D.C. — Today, former President Donald Trump and many of his top advisers and attorneys were indicted in Fulton County, Georgia, on a wide range of felony charges alleging that he illegally attempted to overturn the valid results of the 2020 election that he lost in the state. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This indictment is another powerful rejection of Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a valid and fair election. He tried to deny the will of millions of Georgia voters with bogus claims of voter fraud. He shamelessly pressured the state’s election officials who were only doing their civic duty to count the vote. He must be held accountable. This indictment is one more step toward protecting our democracy and assuring the American people that no one is above the rule of law.
