Washington, D.C. — Today, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement on the September 2022 employment situation figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics—which show that the U.S. economy has gained more than 10 million jobs in the 20 months since President Joe Biden took office:
We’ve become accustomed to big jobs reports since January 2021, but we shouldn’t lose sight of how remarkable our economic recovery is. Ten million jobs in 20 months marks one of the most productive eras of growth for the U.S. labor market in American history. This recovery wasn’t an accident; it’s the result of the sustained, strategic investments the Biden administration and Congress have made in the American economy—first through the American Rescue Plan and its vaccination program and now through the bipartisan infrastructure legislation, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act.
But most importantly, we can’t lose sight of what this investment and each job represents: more opportunity. A parent who can be sure that they can buy groceries or keep a roof over their children’s heads, a 20-something who can start saving for retirement or start a small business—these are not small things for the American people, and they are why the United States has mounted one of the strongest economic recoveries across advanced economies.
