Washington, D.C. — Today, more than 100 state lawmakers from around the country will join dozens of state legislators from Texas at a rally to demand that Congress take action to protect voting rights. In response, Michael Sozan, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
These state lawmakers are on Capitol Hill to send a clear and urgent message to Congress: The ongoing shameful attacks on voting rights threaten our democracy, and it’s time for the Senate to act now. It’s time to put an end to this unprecedented effort to suppress voters of color and those from historically marginalized communities. The Senate must quickly pass the transformative For the People Act, which would set national standards that protect Americans’ right to vote. The Senate must listen to these state legislators and delay the August recess so they can stop these anti-voter laws now.
