STATEMENT: CAP’s John Podesta Praises Joint Commitment From United States and China on Climate Change

Washington, D.C. — In response to a joint commitment between the United States and China to push forward on addressing the climate crisis, Center for American Progress Founder and Chair of the Board of Directors John Podesta released the following statement:

Our future looks brighter today. Thanks to the hard work of U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and China Special Envoy for Climate Change Xie Zhenhua, this joint commitment is an important step forward in the goal to limit the worst impacts of the climate crisis. China’s commitment to do its part to reduce dangerous methane production is good news for every person living on this planet. All countries must work together to swiftly phase out the burning of coal, end government handouts to fossil fuel companies, reduce harmful deforestation, build a just and equitable economy, support nature-based solutions, and lift all voices in our search for solutions. Our words must translate into action; it’s time to deliver for this generation and the next.
