Washington, D.C. — In response to President Joe Biden’s day-one announcements that he would return the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement and reject the dirty-and-dangerous Keystone XL pipeline once and for all, Center for American Progress Founder and Chair of the Board John Podesta and Senior Vice President for Energy and Environment Christy Goldfuss issued the following statement:
It is a new day. President Biden has a mandate to build a clean-energy future that ends environmental racism, protects wild spaces, and provides good-paying union jobs for all who want them. Today’s actions to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement; review the anti-science policies of the last administration; revise important protections for public health; reconsider rollbacks of protections for—and resource exploitation within—our treasured public lands and waters; and reject the Keystone XL pipeline will place the United States on the start of a path to a safe and stable climate. On his first day in office, President Biden has joined state and local leaders acting to build a clean and healthy future. He’s heard the voices of Americans who feel the impact of our climate crisis, and he recognizes that the United States must work as a partner on this global challenge. He’s listening to the scientists who say that, without immediate action, the scope of our challenges will only grow. We have so much to do and no time to waste.
