Washington, D.C. — Today, the White House announced that President Joe Biden will sign an executive order that would place the federal government on a path to net-zero emissions by 2050. The order leverages the government’s enormous purchasing power to invest in clean energy and vehicles, reduce carbon emissions, and help drive the nation’s transition to a cleaner, healthier economy. In response, Christy Goldfuss, senior vice president for Energy and Environment Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This executive order is the kind of leadership we need from the federal government to rapidly drive reductions in U.S. emissions. It will help expand the private sector market for clean technology industries and speed up the nation’s progress toward achieving a clean energy economy. This plan is a welcome example of the government shouldering responsibility by driving—through procurement and increased demand—our nation’s much-needed transition to electric vehicles, cleaner power, and more efficient buildings. With the inclusion of the “buy clean” initiative, it will invest in U.S. companies and American workers, support millions of good-paying jobs, and help the nation compete in the global clean energy economy of the future.
