Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Distinguished Senior Fellow Carol M. Browner issued the following statement after Mexico announced its post-2020 national commitments to curb carbon pollution. Known as the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution, or INDC, today’s announcement is a serious commitment to cut carbon pollution by 22 percent by 2030, among other climate goals.
Mexico’s announcement is well timed and welcome news and signals to the international community that action to address climate change is in the best interests of the global community. Mexico has put forward a serious commitment to action and joins the United States, the European Union, and China in demonstrating leadership in the run-up to the Paris talks. And it demonstrates the pan-hemispheric cooperation between nations—the United States and Mexico, in this case—that will be needed to meet the most serious environmental and public health challenge of our time.
