STATEMENT: CAP’s Alan Yu Praises New Sanctions Against Russia

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden administration announced a new round of more than 500 sanctions against Russian companies and individuals following the death of dissident Alexei Navalny. President Joe Biden has placed the blame for Navalny’s death on Russian President Vladimir Putin. In response, Alan Yu, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The imprisonment and cruel death of Navalny was Putin’s attempt to kill the democratic spirit of the Russian people. But millions of Russians will not forget this injustice, and the United States has shown again that it stands with them. These new sanctions will disrupt the finances that support Putin’s murderous regime anywhere they exist. In addition to sanctions, the United States must continue to stand strong with allies and partners, investing in the trans-Atlantic security order. Putin has once again demonstrated he will stop at nothing to advance his authoritarian, imperial worldview. This is about choosing democracy and security in the face of repression and disorder.
