Washington, D.C. — Today, Center for American Progress President and CEO Patrick Gaspard released the following statement on the third anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and American democracy:
The January 6 insurrection was real, disturbing, traumatic, and continues to haunt the halls of our most iconic symbols of government. No amount of misinformation or whitewashing of history can change that. Good Americans were assaulted. Elected leaders hid in fear. Lives were lost. Accountability has been slow and uneven. The fault lines in our democracy have been exposed.
This is not a date frozen in infamy. Donald Trump and his enablers attempted to stop the peaceful transfer of power then and continue to celebrate political violence even now. This is a near and present danger that must be addressed with hard questions in our media and reforms in legislative bodies—in our states and nationally. Our collective failure to do so will invite future assaults on the integrity of our elections and our system of government.
