Washington, D.C. — Following California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) announcement today that his state will be taking a major step to accelerate actions against climate change by embracing a quick transition to electric vehicles, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Today, Governor Newsom has put California in a position to lead the nation on climate action and set an example for other states to take swift action on curbing carbon emissions. California’s commitment to accelerate its transition to electric vehicles is a critical step forward in ushering in a cleaner transportation sector worldwide. As California deals with the worst fire season in its history, Americans are coming to grips with the reality of the massive damage caused by our changing climate. The specter of massive West Coast fires carrying smoke all the way to the Atlantic is sounding alarm bells. I applaud Governor Newsom for taking swift action, recognizing that his state—and the country—cannot wait to act on climate.
