RELEASE: With Americans Facing Utility Bill Increases This Year, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Threatens To Drive Costs Even Higher

Washington, D.C. — American households are already facing higher electricity and gas bills, with nearly three-fourths of Americans concerned about further price increases this year. A new analysis from the Center for American Progress finds that nearly 60 electric and natural gas utilities are raising or trying to raise Americans’ utility bills this year by $38 billion for 57 million electric customers and $3.5 billion for 26 million natural gas customers. Now, pending legislation in the Senate is poised to make Americans’ bills even “bigger.”

The current budget reconciliation bill includes proposals that would exacerbate utility cost increases for American households while filling the pockets of oil and gas companies. Costly provisions of the bill include rolling back federal tax credits for clean and affordable sources of electricity. In its current form, the bill would increase average annual electricity costs by $110 per household by 2026. At a time when many Americans are already making difficult financial decisions because of high energy costs, Americans cannot afford to pay more rate hikes.

Among the column’s findings:

  • Duke Energy Florida customers saw a $32.40 monthly increase starting in March.
  • Imperial Irrigation District customers in California paid an extra $29.81 starting in February.
  • Atlantic City Electric customers will see a $28.02 monthly increase starting this June.

“With millions of Americans facing electricity and natural gas rate hikes, House Republicans passed a bill that would raise electricity bills even higher, making it harder for Americans to keep up with rising utility costs,” said Shannon Baker-Branstetter, senior director of Domestic Climate and Energy Policy at CAP and co-author of the column. “The passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act would further compound this administration’s onerous actions that are already increasing electricity prices. The ball is now in the Senate’s court to decide whether its duty is to serve working-class Americans or increase electricity costs to provide tax giveaways for the wealthy.”
